Welcome to the British Embassy in Baghdad’s main Chevening webpage. Here you will find information on the Chevening Scholarship scheme, its commercial and charitable supporters, details of how to apply, and links to other Chevening relevant online resources. This information is relevant for the whole of Iraq.
Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarships programme. Established in 1983, these scholarships support study at UK universities – mostly one-year Masters’ degrees – for students with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers.
Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields, including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia.
Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries, in most regions of the world. In the current academic year, there are over 700 Chevening scholars at universities across the UK.
Chevening Scholarships are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), with some contributions from universities and other partners in the UK and overseas, including governmental and private sector bodies.
You can read about one example of how the Chevening programme is helping Iraqis here.
The Primary source of funding for the Chevening programme is the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. But a significant proportion of students also have their studies funded thanks to the generous support of private companies and charitable institutions that partner with the FCO, and individual British Embassies and High Commissions.
In Iraq, we have been extremely fortunate to continue to receive support from the BP Foundation, which is paying for Iraqi students to study in the UK with a $500,000 grant spread over three years. You can find out more about BP’s support here.
If you or your organisation are interested in sponsoring Iraqi students to study in the UK and wish to do so through the Chevening programme, please contact the British Embassy in Baghdad at BritEmbBaghdad@fco.gov.uk
Applications for 2013 Chevening Scholarships will open later this year. Full information about application deadlines and selection criteria will be made available then.
