Death of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim (27/08/2009)
Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, has offered his condolences to the family of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim after the death of the former leader of the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council.
The Foreign Secretary praised his work in securing Iraq's freedom and role he played in guiding the Iraqi people towards a democratic and prosperous future saying his 'legacy will live on in the new Iraq he worked so hard to forge'.
The letter, to his son Ammar Aziz Al-Hakim, said:
"I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of your father, after his long illness. My thoughts and condolences are with you and your family at this sad time.
I also offer my condolences to the Iraqi people who have lost a symbol of Iraq with his death. As one of Iraq’s spiritual and political leaders, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim played a prominent role in securing your country’s freedom and since 2003 he continued to guide the Iraqi people towards a democratic and prosperous future.
I hope his legacy will live on in the new Iraq he worked so hard to forge."
